All mammals, reptiles and birds have a human form, and all humans have an animal form. This means that the only living creatures on the planet that do not posses two forms are fish and insects.

The world of "To Belong" is purely fictional and has a completely unique world map. However: some cultures, fashion, architecture and languages are inspired by our own history.

The majority of the people in this world are vegetarian/vegan, but some do choose to eat fish and insects. Dairy products are sold worldwide, but their popularity varies from culture to culture.

Discrimination based on one's animal form does occur, but it is usually not socially acceptable.

One's animal form is based on how one is born: If the mother is in human form while giving birth, the child´s animal form will be based on random chance. But if the mother is an animal while giving birth, then the child will automatically inherit her form.

There are no mythical or fantastical creatures in this world. The rarest of forms are animals that have already gone extinct in our world, like mammoths.

Apart from human/animal transformations, there is no "magic" present in this universe.

It is impossible to have more than one animal form.

People tend to fall in three different categories:

1. Those who prefer being human and almost never change.

2. Those who like to jump between forms based on convenience. 

3. Those who would rather stay in their animal form as much as possible.

It is impossible to not know one's animal form. The first change happens naturally during the first years of life, and babies may even change form even when they sneeze (which can be really inconvenient for parents).

The only parts affected by the transformation are physical aspects the body. Clothes, accessories, etc. are not affected.

Tattoos, scars, piercings, etc will be visible on both the animal and human form. To some extent that is: Sometimes fur will cover tattoos for example.

The idea of “pets” is a foreign concept in this world.

Animals with four legs can learn to walk on two legs, but it is highly unusual since then it would be much more convenient to be a human instead. But everybody can talk in animal form.
